Cast

Gord Rand

Gord is an actor, playwright and filmmaker. He has performed on stages around the world, from San Francisco to Rwanda, including 9 seasons at The Shaw Festival. Most recently, he played the title role in OEDIPUS REX at The Stratford Festival and HAMLET for Necessary Angel at the Worldstage. He won a Dora Award for his portrayal of a naked Ukranian plutonium dealer in Michael Healey’s THE INNOCENT EYE TEST (Mirvish). He also toured the world with GOODNESS (Volcano Theatre), and appeared in THE TEST (The Company), THE PHILANDERER (Shaw Festival) and ABYSS (Tarragon). Recent screen appearances include: Ben in AN AUDIENCE OF CHAIRS and Jim in Gary Burns’ new film MAN RUNNING, Abel in HULU’S PURE, Detective Duko in ORPHAN BLACK (CSA Nomination, ACTRA Award Nomination), as well as guest starring on RANSOM, TAKEN, WYNONNA EARP, CARDINAL, DURHAM COUNTY, CRACKED, KILLJOYS and was RSM Kelly in the ABC series COMBAT HOSPITAL.

Gord also directed GOODNESS in Rwanda as well as writing the plays ORGY IN THE LIGHTHOUSE, POND LIFE, and the recently published THE TROUBLE WITH MR ADAMS (Scirocco Drama). He has just completed his next feature film – based on his 2005 hit play POND LIFE – and is writing a new play – THE RECLINE OF THE AMERICAN EMPIRE. He’s lucky: he lives in downtown Toronto, grows his own hot peppers, has a lovely wife, two beautiful boys and a very large dog.

Natalie Brown

Natalie Brown is a Canadian actress best known for her work in Guillermo Del Toro’s THE STRAIN on FX Networks, for which she won a Golden Maple Award for Best Performance in a Series Broadcast in the US, as well as her Gemini-nominated starring roll in SOPHIE for CBC/ABC Family. Her film credits range from her first feature HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS to XX, the first all-female horror anthology which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. Natalie has worked extensively in a myriad of SYFY series, such as BEING HUMAN, BITTEN, DARK MATTER, and CHANNEL ZERO: CANDLE COVE, and more recently on the streaming hits JACK RYAN on Amazon and Netflix’s hit comedy SCHITT’S CREEK.

 

Etienne Kellici

Etienne is a very creative, artistic, and passionate kid! He loves acting and sports and is currently enrolled in karate, soccer and baseball. He is known for roles in the feature film, READY OR NOT, the series OCTOBER FACTION, and for playing the role of Young John in the movie FALLING written and directed by Viggo Mortensen.

Patrick McKenna

Patrick began his acting career with Toronto’s famous Second City Theatre Company. Then he took to the road as a stand up comedian headlining in universities and clubs throughout North America with highlights including being the opening act for Dionne Warwick and Smokey Robinson. He’s know for fifteen seasons on the RED GREEN SHOW as the loveable, nerdy, techno-geek, Harold; while simultaneously performing five seasons in the acclaimed dramatic series TRADERS. Variety newspaper noted, Mr. McKenna “has made television history” by being awarded Gemini’s for both the “Best performance by a Lead Actor in a Comedic Series” and “Best performance by a Lead Actor in a Dramatic Series” in the same year on the same night. Patrick co-stars in the hospital series, HARD ROCK MEDICAL for TVO and APTN as well as Global Televisions hit drama, REMEDY. With any remaining free time, Patrick continues to guest star in several dramatic and comedic series from MURDOCH MYSTERIES to THE MERCER REPORT and lends his voice to multiple animated series including CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, INSPECTOR GADGET, and Roy of ESME & ROY.

Carina Battrick

Carina Battrick is a natural born performer and has been acting since the age of 4. She has been compared to Jacob Tremblay in her acting style. She has already worked on over 10 projects in film and TV series. She is also a competitive dancer. When she is not on a movie set or dance studio she loves spending time with her 2 sisters.

Rakhee Morzaria

Rakhee Morzaria is an actress and comedian who produced, wrote and starred in the Canadian Screen Award and Canadian Comedy Award nominated web series, NOTE TO SELF. She’s appeared in a variety of television shows and films including Comedy Central’s THE BEAVERTON and Peter Segal’s MY SPY starring Dave Bautista.

Mia Swaminathan

Mia SwamiNathan is a 6 year old actress. She began acting in commercials and has voiced the role of Heather in the cartoon series CORN & PEG, along with other voice roles on the upcoming television series, BLUES CLUES and ELENOR WONDERS WHY. Mia enjoys soccer, swimming and spending time with her family.

Avi Federgreen / Director & Producer

Avi Federgreen has over twenty years of experience in the Canadian film industry and has produced over sixty films. His credits include: ONE WEEK, STILL MINE, HIGH LIFE, KISS AND CRY, LIFECHANGER, PRISONER X, SCORE: A HOCKEY MUSICAL, MAN RUNNING and ALTERED SKIN.

Federgreen’s newly completed film, THINGS I DO FOR MONEY directed by Warren P. Sonoda, which is travelling around the film festival circuit. Federgreen is the creator of the Indiecan10K & Indiecan20K First Feature Initiatives that have now helped eight first features get made in Canada.

Federgreen established Indiecan Entertainment in 2011 as a distribution house tailored to audiences hungry for great narrative and documentary films from around the world. Since its inception Indiecan has successfully released over 150 films in Canada, and over 70 films in the United States.

RED BALLOON is his directorial debut.

 

Laura Tremblay / Producer

Laura Tremblay is a producer, actor, and singer with an intense work ethic and endless creative drive. Laura started her career in the entertainment industry as an actor and has an array of film, television & theatre roles to her credit, including THE EXPANSE (Syfy/Space Channel), BEN HUR (2016; Paramount Pictures), FUGUE (Indiecan Entertainment), JUKEBOX HERO (Mirvish), EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL (Starvox), and many more.

In 2016, Laura founded Lucky Dime Films, a production company geared towards making high quality films on small budgets. Laura has produced multiple music videos, a web series and several short films including: MENSES (Official selection of Toronto Short Film Festival), DOORS (Official selection of Toronto After Dark Film Festival), HE & ME (Official selection of Deep Cuts Film Festival, Medusa Underground Film Festival, Berlin Flash Film Festival, & Toronto International Short Film Festival) and many more. Laura was also associate producer on Justin McConnell’s feature film, LIFECHANGER (Official selection of over 15 festivals including Fantasia Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival & Toronto After Dark Film Festival).

Laura prides herself on being a strong voice for women in the Canadian film industry.

Jennifer Pogue / Producer

Jennifer Pogue is a Toronto based Actor, Voice Artist & Producer. As a Producer, Jen has worked on numerous films and music videos both independently and as a contributing member to the Film Production Collective Filmcoop Inc. Films currently traveling the festival circuits include TIME OUT (winner of “Best World Short Film” at ARFF), ORCHID (Toronto ACTRA Women’s Committee Grant Award Recipient), JESSICA JESSICA (multi-award winning, released on CBC Canadian Reflection Program), and the upcoming feature film THINGS I DO FOR MONEY (Shoot Good Films Inc., Federgreen Ent. & Filmcoop Inc). Ongoing, Jen produces for the award-winning comedy duo Baram and Snieckus and the female-driven collective The Firecracker Dept. Jen also serves as an Associate Producer for Women on Screen and co-creator/host of their new podcast series WOMEN ON SCREEN OUT LOUD, as has served the last four years as the Industry Series Producer for The Canadian Film Fest (CFF) – a festival dedicated to celebrating Independent Canadian films and Film makers. Jen thrives on working alongside passionate & dedicated teams to bring compelling stories to screen.

Emily Andrews / Producer

Emily Andrews is an Actor and Producer. Studied and graduated with her BA from the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in London, England. Her theatre acting credits go as far as the West End in London, World famous Edinborough Festival and toured across Canada in a variety of theatre productions. Some of her film credits include: A FISTFUL OF LEAD shot in UK, FLASHPOINT, WAREHOUSE 13, MAYDAY, REIGN, and HAIRSPRAY. She has produced theatre, film and television. In 2010 she became co-founder and CEO of Filmcoop Inc. which has produced over 20 short films, 5 features, numerous music videos, PSA’s and commercials. Filmcoops films have been selected to screen and won awards at various festivals including, Cannes, TIFF, Canadian Film Festival, Venice, Budapest, Raindance to name a few. Emily has been working in the industry since she was a kid and has had the privilege to work with many fantastic companies: CBC, National Screen Institute, Cineflix, National Geographic, Federgreen Entertainment and looks forward to continuing progress and success

Warren P. Sonoda / Executive Producer

BAFTA-winning and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Warren P. Sonoda is known for directing his features COOPERS’ CAMERA, SWEARNET: THE MOVIE, 5IVE GIRLS, HAM & CHEESE, the iconic TV shows TRAILER PARK BOYS, THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES, MURDOCH MYSTERIES and over 160 music videos, 70 episodes of TV and 11 feature films. He’s also edited over 250 music videos & 7 feature films, written or co-written 4 feature films, and along with filmmaker Avi Federgreen, was the executive producer of FUGUE directed by Tomas Street. Warren is thrilled to be unveiling his new passion-project Federgreen/Filmcoop feature film THINGS I DO FOR MONEY about two cello-playing Japanese-Canadian brothers that steal a big bag of money, and all the woes that go along with it, in 2020.

Lauren Greenwood / Writer

Lauren Greenwood is an award-winning screenwriter and playwright. She won the 2019 Telefilm Canada New Voices Award with her feature screenplay GASLIGHT. Her first one act play and directorial debut, AN ATLAS, A NECKTIE & OTHER CONCERNS, won Best of Fringe North (519) at the 2019 Toronto Fringe Festival and was a finalist for the 2019 Cayle Chernin Award for Theatre Production. Her sophomore play BYGONE premieres at the 2020 Toronto Fringe Festival. Lauren holds an honours BA in English and German, an MFA in Screenwriting, and is a proud member of the Playwrights Guild of Canada.

Tammy Stone / Story Editor

Tammy T. Stone is a writer and editor with extensive experience in the film industry as a programmer, script consultant and story editor. Passionate about Canadian cinema, she has long championed filmmakers through their creative journeys from idea to screen. Her short stories have been widely published, and she has been a columnist for Elephant Journal and The Tattooed Buddha. She has also published three poetry collections, most recently LAND (as Tammy Takahashi), in 2018. She is currently writing a novella and feature film. Tammy is newly based in Canada after nearly a decade living in Southeast Asia and Japan.

Christoph Benfey / Director of Photography

Christoph Benfey is an award winning cinematographer and filmmaker. He was recently honoured with a Lieutenant Governor’s Award of Excellence for a commercial he shot and directed for his hometown, the City of Hamilton. Select film and television cinematography includes Warren P. Sonoda’s THINGS I DO FOR MONEY, Stan Brook’s feature film I DO, OR DIE, Florence B. Azar’s CHESTERFIELD (currently streaming on CBC Gem), Courtney Deleen’s HUNTER’S CHANCE, Fenian Films’ STREET SPIRITS, and Avi Federgreen’s RED BALLOON. Christoph lives and breathes filmmaking, he prides himself on working with equally passionate and talented collaborators and is constantly learning ways to hone not just his craft, but the art and understanding of cinematography as a whole.

Orlee Buium / Editor

Orlee Buium is a Toronto-based film editor who has spent the last 15 years balancing her love of film with her passion for the outdoors. She is a 2018 alumni of the Editors’ Lab at the Canadian Film Centre where she had the opportunity to hone her craft through collaboration with many up and coming filmmakers. Prior to this she completed a BFA in Film Production and Screenwriting at York University. During this time, she edited several short films, one of which won a CCE Student Merit Award.

Orlee has spent many years in the cutting room, learning from generous mentors including Michelle Szemberg, Rod Deogrades, and Cam McLauchlin on feature films and television shows such as THE EXPANSE (Alcon Entertainment / SyFy), BETWEEN (Netflix / Rogers), THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS (Director: Lone Scherfig), UN TRADUCTOR (Director: Rodrigo and Sebastian Barriuso) and BELOW HER MOUTH (Serendipity Point Films).

Orlee has several films presently in the film festival circuit including feature film QUEEN OF THE MORNING CALM (Director: Gloria Kim) which premiered at the Whister Film Festival 2019. ORACLE (Director: Aaron Poole), and FLOOD (Director: Joseph Amenta), premiered at Toronto International Film Festival this fall. ORACLE won the Grand Prix in the National Competition – Short Films at Le Festival du Nouveau Cinema de Montreal (FNC) in 2019 and will be screening at Slamdance in 2020.

Adaline / Original Score

A successful and prolific composer of music for film and television the Canadian-born now Los Angeles-based artist has had compositions featured in over 80 scenes including GREY’S ANATOMY, 90210, ROOKIE BLUE, LOST GIRL, RINGER, ROYAL PAINS, FLASHPOINT, DEGRASSI, THE LISTENER, HEART-LAND, BOMB GIRLS, KILLJOYS, THE SAMARITAN and more. She worked with Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene on the score for the Bret Easton Ellis written film, THE CANYONS, directed by Paul Schrader, starring Lindsay Lohan, and on the documentary feature YOUTH UNSTOPPABLE which features music from Radiohead and Moby.

Adaline’s sophomore release MODERN ROMANTICS earned a nomination for Pop Recording of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards and was deemed by CBC Radio “A visionary classic; A breathtaking in depth journey of the imagination”. She was selected to do a 10 month composer residency at Norman Jewison’s Canadian Film Centre where she collaborated with Canada’s up and coming film talent. She is also the voice behind many commercial campaigns including the Cineplex successful short film LILY AND THE SNOWMAN which features her cover of FOLLOW YOU FOLLOW ME by Genesis. The film went viral online garnering over 55 million views and was seen by 40 million people in theatres.

Adaline’s latest release AQUATIC received critical acclaim from Paste Magazine, Highlight Magazine, The Line of Best Fit and Pop Dust saying, “Adaline is pop music’s best-kept secret”. The music video for the single NOSTALGIA features GREY’S ANATOMY star and fellow CFC alumni Giacomo Gianniotti.

Her upcoming release DEAR ILLUSION is a collection of music inspired by the Californian landscape. Breezy pop hooks infused with stories of disillusionment, addiction, and a journey into a revelatory love. Largely produced by Maximilian Jaeger (Diplo, Big Sean) there is a noted shift from the moody sound we would normally expect from Adaline. Lyrically still dark and reflective but with a sonic lightness that feels dreamy, ethereal and bright – a heavy heart standing in the sun.

George Flores / Sound Design

George Flores is an independent Sound Editor, Sound Designer, and Re-Recording Sound Mixer offering complete Sound Post-Production for film, television, and new media. He uses state-of-the-art hardware and software, including Pro-Tools 11HDX with the complete CEDAR Studio. His credentials include: Cinema Audio Society and Motion Picture Sound Editor accreditation, membership to the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, and extensive professional credits and industry references.

Ginger Martini / Costume Design

Having transitioned from fashion design to costume design for TV and film over 10 years ago, Ginger Martini has lent her talents to multiple award-winning films, including Vincenzo Natali’s latest feature IN THE TALL GRASS (Patrick Wilson) for Netflix, BACKCOUNTRY (Missy Peregym) and FALL (Micheal Murphy). Her previous series experience includes the premiere season of CARDINAL (HULU/CTV) as well as the second season of Hulu Original HOLLY HOBBIE. Currently in post production, JAMES VS. HIS FUTURE SELF (Daniel Stern, Frances Conroy), is set to debut in late 2019.

Ginger is currently in her 9th season of Costume Designing for the long running comedy series LETTERKENNY (HULU/CraveTv).
